Etsy Photos 2 105.JPG
Materials Needed:
  • all 3/8″ grosgrain ribbon
  • choose 3 different colors for the wings of your butterfly
  • choose a color for the antennae
  • pom poms
  • alligator clip
  • hot glue
  • scissors
  • ruler or measuring tape

Measurements: (and what the pieces are for)
  • (4) 3″ for outer wings
  • (4) 2.5″ for middle wings
  • (4) 2″ for inner wings
  • (1) 4.5″ for clip liner
  • (1) 1″ cut into 2 for antennae
  • (3) large or (5) small pom poms for body
  • (1) 1.75″ alligator clip

Instructions:
  • Heat seal all pieces of ribbon.
  • There a are 4 pieces of each color, or 2 pairs.  1 pair is for each wing.  Glue each pair together with a dot of glue at the tips so they form a right angle.  Flip it around and do the same thing with the other ends so they form a rounded football shape.  Repeat for each pair of ribbons. You should have 6 pair, 2 of each color.
  • Next, 1 of the outer wings and 1 of the middle wings and glue the middle one on the back of the outer one, about halfway down from the point.  Do the same glueing the inner wings onto the middle wings.  Then we change our pattern.  Take the other tip of the inner wings and glue it just below the other inner wing that you just glued on.  Next glue on the middle wing and finally the other tip of the outer wing.
  • Repeat to make a second wing.
  • Bring the 2 wings together. I usually snip off the pointed tip, so the wings fit together better. Glue the tips together.
  • Glue the wings to the ribbon lined alligator clip.
  • Next, make the antennae and glue onto the clip.
  • Last, glue on the pom poms.

Woven Heart for Valentine’s Day

This woven heart can is very versatile, as it can be made with ribbon as shown here, or even as a craft for kids with construction paper.  Once complete, it can be placed on a hair clip, or a pin or even a badge reel holder. Here we use 3/8″ wide saddle stitch grosgrain in white with red stitch and red with black stitch.

img_20170125_225559

White with red stitch:
4″ and 4.5″

Red with black stitch:
4″ and 4.5″

For saddle stitch ribbon, I find it easier to stack the layers first before heat sealing the ends.  Take the 4″ piece and place it on top of the 4.5″ piece of the same color and adhere together on one end with a dot of glue. Repeat with other color.  Then heat seal all ends.

Place glued end on one of the sets on top of the other set on the glued end at a 90 degree angle to each other.  Then begin weaving and gluing each step of the way.

I will need to include more detailed pictures later on for these steps.

My Favorite Christmas Tree (12 Branches)

Date Created: 12/2/16 (after several times of making these)
Difficulty Level: Intermediate
Time to Complete: 30 minutes
IMG_20161202_234113.jpg
Materials Needed:
3/8″ grosgrain ribbon
Tree branches: emerald green, green print with ornaments or green print with snowflakes
Bow: red, white, pink, silver, gold, any color (saddle stitch, polka dot, pattern print, sheer glittery)
Trunk clip liner: brown or brown with polka dots
Jem or rhinestone optional
needle and thread for bow
hot glue
salon clip, badge holder, magnet, pin…whatever you are going to mount it on
Measurements: (and what the pieces are for)
(12) 2″ for tree branches
(1) 4.5-5″ for bow
(1) 4.5″ for trunk clip liner

Instructions:
  • Heat seal ends of all ribbons
  • For each branch, place a dot of glue on top of one end, place the other end on top at an angle to create a teardrop shape, leaving a small hole in the center. Repeat for all 12 branches
  • Mount 4 branches together. Mount 3 branches together.  Mount 3 branches together again. Mount 2 branches together.
  • Line clip with ribbon for tree trunk.
  • Glue bottom wrung of 4 branches near the bottom of the clip. Next glue 3, then 3, then 2.
  • Make bow topper and glue on top of tree.  Embellish bow.
Notes:
  • Tree can be emerald or any other green (but no one purchased the dark evergreen color) and everyone LOVED when I made it with the light green that had an ornament Christmas pattern with a red with white saddle stitch bow. I personally liked it better with the white with red saddle stitch bow.
  • Keep hole in loop small
  • Don’t angle bottom row in too much, keep in more level
  • Really Spread the 3 out
  • Glue each row together first, then glue the row to the clip.  The top most row will run out of clip and just be glued to the previous row.
  • If making it on a badge pull, simply fold the clip liner in half and glue turner for more stability. Charging $7 for badge pull tree, probably $6 or $6.50 on a clip

2014-09-09 Fall Sculptures (26) pm 2
Materials Needed:
  • 2 1/4″ black ribbon
  • 1/4″ black ribbon
  • 3/8″ Halloween ribbon
  • cardboard or plastic to create templates
  • template to trace for hat circle and cone
  • light colored pencil for marking black ribbon
  • needle and black thread
  • 1 3/4″ single prong salon clip aka alligator clip
  • non-slip grip like Silly Grip
  • hot glue gun
  • lighter
  • protective heat mat

Measurements: (and what the pieces are for)
  • 2 1/4″ of 2 1/4″ black ribbon for round hat bottom
  • 3″ of 2 1/4″ black ribbon for hat cone
  • 5″ of 3/8″ Halloween ribbon for bow, cut edges into V shape
  • 3/4″ of 1/4″ black ribbon for bow center wrap
  • 3 1/2″ of 3/8″ Halloween ribbon for hat wrap, cut edges at 30% slant up
  • 4 1/2″ of  3/8″ Halloween ribbon for alligator clip liner

Instructions:
  • These are very general instructions, so I hope to be posting a video with more detail as soon as I can.
  • Trace templates for circle and cone onto the pieces of 2 1/4″ black ribbon using a white chalk pencil or light colored pencil so you can see where to cut it.
  • Cut out circle and cone, and heat seal all edges.
  • Wrap cone piece into cone shape and glue into place. (I’ll be making a video shortly showing how to do this, it is a little tricky.)
  • Use scissors if necessary to even out bottom of hat so it will sit flat on the circle, just make sure there are no bumps.
  • Starting in the back of the hat on the crease, glue the 3 1/2″ piece of Halloween ribbon to the hat with 1 dot.  It will still be sticking out on both sides.
  • 1 side at a time, add a little glue and adhere, wrapping it around to the front.  It will not all go on, it will slant down, and you will cut off the excess afterwards.
  • Cut off excess from wrap.
  • As evenly and quickly as possible, line glue around the entire circular bottom of hat cone and then center and stick onto hat circle before it dries.
  • Make bow, and glue onto center front of hat where points of hat wrap meet, thus covering that part up.
  • Finally, determine which way your hat will face and glue onto a ribbon lined alligator clip.

Layered Fabric Flower

Layered Fabric Flower

This fabric flower can be made from tattered circles or flower patterned pieces of fabric folded into quartered pieces.  You can use 9 petals of t-shirt material or any pattern or solid cotton fabric.  I’ve even tried this with singed satin irregular circles or sheer material.
scrap-maniac-171
Use 5 rounded edges on pattern of flower.  Fold the piece of material in half and then in half again so it is triangularly shaped.  Fold so that they do not line up symmetrically. 5 edges is the trick, I tried 8 bumps the first time and that is too much. After gluing down 4 petals on 1 layer, then make a second layer on top with another 4 petals.  Roll the 9th petal for center, snip off the tip so it is not too tall (about 1/8-1/4″) and put puddle of glue in center and push down with finger.  Then glue closest edge of outer petals up to the center rolled piece to add dimension.
Video I watched to learn how to do this:
Another YouTube Video shows a neater way to fold the petals for even more texture: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gecQrb1fzIk&feature=player_embedded

Reindeer Ribbon Sculpture Hair Clip

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is always a kid favorite around the holidays.  Here are the measurements I like to use to make my Reindeer Ribbon Sculptures.
Date Created: Winter 2014
Difficulty Level: Intermediate
Time to Complete: 30 minutes?
Pricing: $6-$8
img_20150925_145002
Materials Needed:
  • 3/8″ medium brown grosgrain
  • 7/8″ medium brown grosgrain
  • 7/8″ dark brown grosgrain
  • 3/8″ holiday print
  • googly eyes
  • red glitter pom pom or red button
  • 5-6mm rhinestone or jingle bell
Measurements: (and what the pieces are for)
  • Head: 3 1/2″ of 7/8″ medium brown grosgrain
  • Ears: (2) 2″ of  3/8″ medium brown grosgrain
  • Antlers: (1) 2″ piece of 7/8″ dark brown grosgrain and cut (2) antlers from it
  • Reindeer’s Bow: 4 1/2″ of  3/8″ Christmas ribbon
  • Eyes: (1) pair 7-8mm googly eyes
  • Nose: (1) red glitter pom pom or red button
  • Bow Center (optional): (1) 5-6mm rhinestone or jingle bell
Instructions:
  • Cut and seal all ribbons, except antlers.
  • Fold head piece so that ends meet perpendicularly and glue, pressing down flat.
  • Fold ears so that end overlap forming a teardrop shape, repeat for 2nd ear and then glue ears together and very tip.
  • Glue ears onto back of head.
  • Create a template for the antlers.  These will take lots of practice to get them the way you want and take up the majority of time in the project. Once you cut them out, heat sealing them properly is what really gives them the shape. Once I get them even, then glue on the back.
  • Tie or sew bow and attach. Embellish with jewel or jingle bell.
  • Glue on eyes and nose.
  • Glue onto ribbon lined alligator clip.
Variations:
  • Pink bow and pink nose, or pink and green
  • Any colors to match dress or outfit
  • Mount on pin to wear on outfit
  • Mount on magnet for the fridge
  • Mount on badge holder to wear to work
  • Clip Reindeer clip on to bigger bow or mount directly on bigger bow for more bling
Originally priced at $8 in 2014, but dropped price to $6 in 2015 because I had the materials on hand and I was able to make them faster.
